Language Arts
The second grade students are becoming familiar with the routines of our reading workshop. They are learning different strategies to solve unknown words such as using meaning to make a good guess and then using the print to cross check. They are building their strength by reading. The goals is for them to understand the relationships between characters through the events and challenges in a story and identify points of views of characters and understand the author’s intentions.
Mathematics
Go Math! Helps children engage with the common core standards in exciting ways. The lesson started by determining whether a group of objects has an odd or even number. The second graders learned odd and even numbers by pairing objects of counting by 2’s. To understand place value of numbers, they learned that the three digits of a three-digit number represents amounts of hundreds, tens and ones. They are learning to read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals. number names and expanded form.
Science
The second graders were given the opportunity to be like scientists in the first unit of the Science Fusion second grade program. They learned that scientists observe and classify the world around them! They practices their processing skills by observing a group of objects and grouping the objects based on their attributes.
Social Studies
Sharing information bout themselves was an ideal way to get to know each other and to recognize their own positive qualities., attributes, and what they enjoy doing. During the ‘Show and Tell’. the second graders were encouraged to talk confidently about their favorite things. This activity gave them a feeling of being listened to and encouraged other children to question the given information and each other. Our discussion about Children’s Rights made them realize that they have specific rights and how important each right is. Through their discussions about the ‘Community’, the children learned the role of each member of the community and their importance.
