MARCH 4WARD NEWSLETTER

History

We have now moved to the 18th Century in our ‘Medicine through Time’ core unit. We learned how the Englishman Edward Jenner created the first-ever vaccine. A discovery that is very relevant today in our fight against Covid-19. Interesting fact: He used Cowpox in order to vaccinate against Smallpox. Vacca which makes up the first half of the word vaccination is Latin for cow

ICT

We gained knowledge in formatting features in Excel. Ms. Jundelyn showed us many of her favorite tricks, bringing meaning to spreadsheets. Adding style makes a spreadsheet easier to read and less prone to mistakes. We did Formatting Excel spreadsheets because it isn’t just about making them “pretty” It’s about using the built-in styles to add meaning. We understand that a spreadsheet user should be able to glance at a cell and understand it without having to look at each and every formula. We have already learned about data entry and formula, so for this month it was all about formatting.

Science

Unit 7 ended with the Neutralization of Acids, Alkalis, and Bases, with that behind us we moved to the next topic where we learned about Rocks, Minerals, and Soils.  We discussed the components of rocks and discovered that some rocks like granite have minerals embedded in them which can include quartz, feldspar, and mica. This type of rock is valued for its use in construction especially for floors and kitchen tops. We have covered Unit 8 all the way to Unit 9 which was about “Forces.” Right now we are working on our 2nd -trimester presentation project.

Geography

We learned about how the water system in Boracay works. We concluded our river journey by creating a 3D model of a river and labeled the different parts of it. After working super hard to replicate a river we presented our 3D model river to the class and we shared how we made it. We also learned about the five different landforms created by the river.

KP

We created a poster for our KP project. This poster explained the educational system of ancient Filipinos. We compared the changes in the educational system brought by the Spaniards and the impact it had on the life of the early Filipinos.

Art

For our painting project, we didn’t even use the grid method to make our work easier in sketching. Instead, we sketched the subject directly on the sketchpad. We were asked to use any medium to discover ideas in painting natural subjects.

Language Arts

This trimester we studied poetry in more depth. We learned how to use pictures and turn them into poems, and tone and mood, and some examples. We also dived more into persuasive techniques and how we could use them when writing a paragraph. Lastly, we learned about the author’s purpose- where we think about why the author wrote a particular story. And for a challenge, we explored 3 of the four language skills, listening and speaking, language and writing, in-depth by doing choice boards. Stepping into the next trimester we will use Quill to sharpen our language and writing skills.
